HANDLED BROOMS - BROOM BINDING AND WEAVING
LÄRARE: RALEIGH KLOTZEK
ANTAL DELTAGARE: 10 ST
DAG OCH TID: 1 DAG, FREDAG
PRIS: 800 sek
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: During this full day Broom Making class we will have the opportunity to learn the process of making full sweep brooms. Using wooden handles we will bind the broom corn to the handle, weave the stalks if desired, and then bind or flat weave the hurl (the bristles of the broomcorn). We will work primarily on two styles of brooms - A cobweb sweeper and a floor sweep. *Note - Brooms of this style are usually made over a few days in order for the material to dry. Due to the nature of the festival we are doing the process in one day. Students will need to take their brooms home and put them in a very warm space, near a stove, or radiator in order to prevent molding!
What to bring as a participant?
You are welcome to bring your own handles for your brooms. You need 2 handles about 2.5-3 cm round: 1 about 1.2 meters long for the floor sweeper, and the second one for getting cobweb’s needs to be as short or long as you need for your ceilings. The broomcorn will add another 45 cm + off the end of your handle, so make sure to take that into consideration. Your handles must be from dry wood. Fresh wood will shrink when drying and result in a lose broom!
If you don’t bring handles I will have handles for everyone available.
Cost of Materials: 400-600 sek (based on current material cost, calculated closer to festival date)

BIO: I grew up in the mountains and red rock desert of the United States, and have lived most of
my adult life on the move. From beekeeping and agroforestry in Zambia, to living on a fishing
boat in Alaska, I’ve managed to find myself living and working in some truly incredible places.
I stumbled upon spoon carving in 2015 while waiting to get a random tattoo with a good friend.
He pulled out a pocket knife and a rough spoon he was working on, and as an ex-professional
childhood stick sharpener, my interest piqued and I was hooked.
Fast forward to 2019, I moved to Sweden to follow my now fiancé, and for the next few years I
filled my free time with diving deep into the carving world. Spoon carving revealed an artistic
and creative side of myself that I didn’t know existed. Combine that with an existing passion for
the outdoors and interest in woodworking, and I’ve been captivated since that first spoon in
2015. Since then, I’ve approached carving with intention and humility. 8 years into the journey,
carving full-time, teaching those interested in learning, and I’m still humbled and inspired by the
craft and community.

BIO: The fascination of documenting everything around me started with my very first, very pixelated, mobile phone camera as a young teen. The creativity grew alongside technology, and my room became a makeshift, messy, DIY photo studio in an attempt to visually express my internal ideas. As an adult I studied photography on Gotland and post-production in Stockholm, which has led me to currently working as a commercial retoucher.
